Let There Be Light: The Light of Majesty | Matthew 2:11 | Devotional

Matthew 2:11
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

What did the Magi see when they entered the house? Jesus preformed no convincing miracles. No words came from his mouth. These men saw nothing but a helpless infant dependent on His young, poor mother…and yet, they believed and “bowed down and worshipped him.”

Contrast the action of the Magi with the “wise men” of our day. These intellectuals always need more convincing. They seek more “proof” as a way to put off their decision for Jesus. As long as there is one more thing to prove, there will be more day of hiding inside their proud minds.

The old commentator J. C. Ryle says, in reference to the Magi, “We read of no greater faith than this in the whole volume of the Bible . . . This is the kind of faith that God delights to honor.” Do you bow before Jesus with the faith and worship of the Magi?

Father, help us not to hide behind the smoke screens of intellect, independence, or selfishness. Give us the gift and courage of real faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
